Why the Acorn?

Do you ever wonder why organizations and communities choose a particular symbol or thing to represent themselves in the world?  Rather than to leave you wondering, I thought I’d talk a little about the logo and symbol image for Authentic Consulting.

Do a google search on the internet and you’ll find much information about the  positive attributes of the mighty oak:

Wisdom.
Strength.
Durability.
Purity.
Constancy.

But what does all of that have to do with the acorn?  Well, the mighty oak would be nothing without the acorn.  The acorn, as a seed, is a symbol of growth and unlimited potential.  It possess the “oak knowledge” – or all that it needs within to create the mighty oak.  The acorn teaches us about our own potential – how one acorn can grow into a massive oak and seed a whole forest.  If we connect to our authentic selves - clear and informed consciousness, and free of internalized oppression, what might we be able to seed in the world?

We reside in a culture of abundance that is constantly in a spiritual, emotional, and communal state of lack.  The acorn reminds us that greatness exists in us and in our unified culture – if we get back to the authentic self.  Each of us and our world as a whole has all that we need to:

Heal ourselves.
Care for one another.
Create change.
Mend relationships.
Restore justice.
Rebalance energy.

The oak is considered the storehouse of wisdom embodied with its towering strength – and within the small acorn.  The oak is a powerful life-affirming symbol, but so is the acorn.  Because the acorn only appears on a fully mature oak, it is often considered a symbol of patience needed to attain goals over long periods of time.

Our search for the end of oppression is not an overnight job – it requires patience but also urgency, perseverance and hard work.  What kind of work do you think that acorn does to produce that mighty oak?  The biggest tree was once a little acorn nut who stood her ground.  We can reconnect and hold to the truth of our authentic selves in the face of a system of oppression – and watch the system be dismantled.

Great things come from small beginnings.  Every conscious action, word, step, decision that we make can grow into something great.  I’d love to work toward that growth with you.
